how our š°š¬ kyrgyzstan nomad migration šļø adventure is different & what to look forward to āØ
From authentic, generational, family owned Yurts š to incorporating the š°š¬ Kyrgyz Nomad Migration by horse š“, read on the find out more about what makes our Adventure unique and the many highlights to look forward to. āØ
1.Authentic, generational, family owned yurts š
Most if not all š°š¬ Kyrgyzstan trips would definitely include a stay in a Yurt. š
In Kyrgyzstan, there are many different Yurt options š¤ and it can be challenging to find a good balance between authenticity, yet providing reasonably good facilities ie. flush toilets, hot showers, etc.

We make it a point in our š°š¬ Kyrgyzstan Nomad Migration š“ adventure to support local Kyrgyzstan operators and yurts that are owned generationally by local Kyrgyz families. šš»
It felt very personal to meet & have dinner with 3 generations of the family! In fact, technically 4! Since they also recently welcomed a new addition to the family!! š šš»
We even had a little bit of a cultural exchange! š°š¬ As the matriarchs & even our local Kyrgyz guides sang some of their local Kyrgyz songs for us. Then we even ended up singing our Singapore National Day song for them!! š šøš¬
Outside the Yurts are the flush toilets, as well as a converted container for a well needed, hot shower at the end of a long day.
During our trip, we will also stay in 1 more Commercial Yurt, which further allows one to better appreciate the authenticity of the 1st yurt stay above.
⨠Authentic vs more commercialised yurt stay
šø These 2 photos show the difference between the dining room of a more authentic, family owned Yurt stay (left), vs a more commercial, tourist orientated Yurt stay (right). āØ
You will definitely be able to feel the ⨠difference in the atmosphere, interacting with a local family vs staying in a commercialised Yurt built for tourists.
In the dining room of the family owned yurt, notice the Red Carpet hanging in the background? ⨠These are handmade by the Kyrgyz family, and hold much value & culture to the families, of which you will learn more about and hear more stories of when visiting.

š At our Song Kol Lake yurt stay, we also got to see many local Kyrgyz riders gathering to play some of their traditional Nomad games on horseback. š“
2.experience the kyrgyz nomad migration by horse
āļø Every summer, Kyrgyz Nomad Families embark on a migration to higher mountain pastures šļø, known as "Jailoo".
We're glad to, so far to our knowledge, be the only group from Singapore offering this unique & exclusive experience to join š°š¬ Kyrgyz Nomad Families on their Migration as they break down their Yurts, and move their livestock such as horses, riding alongside them for 3-4hrs (May/Jun). š“ (Jun's Horse ride may be significantly longer.)
It was amazing to see how fast they could take down and re-construct the Yurt! ā°
We also learnt how to assemble a Yurt! š šš» The fastest record for setting up a Yurt is currently 17mins by a š°š¬ Kyrgyzstan team, achieved at the š World Nomad Games, beating the previous š²š³ Mongolian record of 1hr 12mins! I think we caused significant delays in the building hahaha. š¤£
We'll also get to ride alongside the Nomad people and their horses for several hours! š“ Offering a true glimpse into the life of the Kyrgyz nomads.
We also got to try freshly squeezed horse milk, as well as shared a meal with the Nomad family! š„
3.šļø Horse riding in the mountains š“
It's the Year of the Horse š“ and certainly an apt year to spend more time with Horses in the Mountains! šļø
We'll have x2 day Horse Rides:
š“ Horse Ride 1. With the Nomads during their Migration (3-4hrs in May/Jun trip)
š“ Horse Ride 2. Chon Kemin (2-3hrs)
These are Day Rides, best suited for intermediate riders, but possible for beginners as well.
They are not Multi-Day Rides, š“ so there is no need to worry about carrying all your belongings.

As š°š¬ Kyrgyzstan transitions from Spring to Summer in May / Jun, the š Wildflowers starting to bloom are also especially beautiful! š

4.šļø breath taking hikes, in every sense of the word
š°š¬ Kyrgyzstan is often called š² "the Switzerland of Asia" š, and for good reason! šļø The country is made up of 90% mountains, and is beautiful to hike through in the Spring & Summer. āļø
It will take your breath away, quite literally as well as figuratively. š

šļø Our hikes are Day Hikes, recommended for intermediate hikers.
They are not not Multi-Day Hikes, so there is no need to worry about carrying all your belongings.
The max Altitude for this trip is 3,000m +. Most insurance with max 3,000m altitude is usually sufficient. However, to be on the safer side you can choose policies that cover above 3,000m.
There are x2 major hikes:
šļø Hike 1. Shabyr Gorge / Moldo Ashu Pass (4-5hrs) Elevation: 2,260m to 2,848m šļø Hike 2. Ak-Suu / Altyn Arashan (5-6hrs)
Elevation: 2,200m to 3,000m+

šļø A hike at high elevation can feel more difficult than a hike with the same terrain at a lower elevation, thus it is recommended for intermediate hikers.
šļø Altyn Arashan is also known as "the Land of Hot Springs". āØļø Whether you choose to hike or take the Russian vehicle ride, a relaxing dip in the hot springs awaits you in Altyn Arashan! š
There is also the option to sit out (Hike 1.) or take a Russian vehicle ride (Hike 2.) if you prefer not to hike.
PS: For Hike 2. please note that the Russian vehicle ride is extremely bumpy for 2 - 3hrs one way. It is like a bumpy rollercoaster ride. It can be quite fun but can also be tiring. There will also be breaks in between.
It is not recommended for people with concern about motion sickness. If you may be prone to motion sickness but still up for it, š motion sickness pills are highly recommended.
There are also some very scenic and less demanding hikes that are more for sightseeing, like the very otherworldly šļø Red Skazka Fairytale Canyon. šø

5.Meet the Berkutchi š¦ horseback eagle hunters š“
First originating in the šļø Altai Mountains region, spanning modern-day Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and parts of western China and Russia, š¦ Eagle Hunting dates back over 4,000 years as a survival skill for nomad Kazakh and Kyrgyz tribes. š
š In need of an efficient way to hunt small animals such as foxes, hares and marmots in harsh terrains, over rocky slopes, steep valley walls and cliffs, š¦ Eagles were able to chase such prey over challenging terrains far more effectively than humans or dogs.
We watched in awe as the Eagles swooped down to catch an artificial bait.
š¹ Equally skilled in Archery, the Hunters also showed off their shooting skills on moving targets as well as shooting from Horseback! š“
There was also a little museum where we learnt more about many old hunting artefacts.
We also got to meet one of their friendly hunting dogs, a šā𦺠Kyrgyz Taigan / Sighthound, known for its speed and endurance in mountainous terrain.
Honestly it seemed so gentle & calm! Not what you would expect compared to western hunting dogs like hounds.
š¹ We also got to try our hand at Archery (but without the horse lah). š There, we also had dinner at the Horseback Eagle Hunters' house, where he also demonstrated how the Kyrgyz people play the Komuz (something like a Ukulele).
Whilst we're on the topic of music, we also had the pleasure of chancing upon a Kyrgyzstan pop group traveling around and performing at the time!
Everyday, we also discovered many hidden talents of our local Kyrgyz guide, also so extremely talented with the Komuz!! š
6.circling & jumping into issyk kul lake
šļø As our Adventure veered toward an end, circling around Issyk Kul Lake š, the visual landscape shifted from the initial šļø lush green valleys of Shabyr and plains of Song Kol Lake, to warmer tones of brown and orange around Issyk Kul. š
āļø As Summer begins in Kyrgyzstan, locals and tourists from all over flock to Issyk Kul Lake š for swimming, sunbathing and boating on the lake. āļø It's still quite cold water from 11 - 15 degrees C, but if you're game for it, jump in for a refreshing swim! š
7.š„ homecooked farewell dinner with song & dance
Toward the end of it all, this beautiful country and the warmth & hospitality that we had been welcomed with truly cemented š°š¬ Kyrgyzstan as a truly special place in all of our hearts. š
We are thankful to work with extremely dedicated local Kyrgyz partners & guides on the ground that welcomed us into their country & homes with so much genuineness, not easily found today in this day and age.
As our talented musicians hitched a ride with us back to town for our last night, despite our language barrier, imagine our surprise when they started playing Bella Ciao, a beautiful goodbye indeed. š
If you've yet to pick 1 big adventure this year, why not join us in š°š¬ Kyrgyzstan this Year of the Horse? š“
