🦁 Kruger National Park is one of Africa's largest and most famous Wildlife Reserves, spanning nearly 20,000 square km in South Africa. 🇿🇦
✨ It is renowned as the Home of the Big Five - the Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo & Rhino, along with Giraffes, Hippos, Crocodiles, Antelopes and so much more! 🦁

After a flight to 🇿🇦 Johannesburg and then to Kruger,
1. We arrived at our beautiful 🦁 Safari lodge
Where we'll be calling home for 4 nights! ✨
Complete with resident crocodiles. 🐊 (Just kidding, it's not real. 😆 Looks legit though right!)

We checked in to our cozy rooms & watched the sun set. 🌅 There are Garden Rooms & Dam Rooms. ✨
If you book early you might even be able to get a ✨ Premium Dam Room like above!
(Subject to Availability. First come first serve basis. Usually only 4 rooms per trip.)
2. We headed to the dining area for our dinner 🥘
We looked for the tables with our room numbers, which would be our dedicated dining table for the duration of our stay. ✨

One question people always ask us is what is the food like? 😋 We had a variety of different dishes served Buffet Style at dinner. ✨
The food was quite international, had a mix of western & even some asian looking stir fried dishes. 😁 Spiced meats. Western favourites like cream pasta, potato wedges..
For Lunch, usually we have it at one of the Rest Camps / Stops in the Kruger park.
After a good (short) night's sleep.. 😴
3. we reported at 5am for our 1st 🦁 safari game drive in kruger!! ✨
4. How's the weather & what to wear?
🥶 It can be pretty chilly in the morning and get pretty hot in the afternoon. 🥵 For our upcoming Oct trips, the temperature range is min 17 - max 31 degrees celsius.
So basically, dress for ☀️ Singapore weather, but have a thick jacket for cold windy mornings and evenings.
A light sun jacket is also useful to protect your skin from the sun mid day. ☀️
Anyways there are also thick blankets on the jeep. 🤗 And since we're on safari, dressing in neutral colours is recommended to blend in! 🦒

After a short 15 - 20 mins drive we arrived at the Kruger Park Gate where we stopped so our Safari guide could sign us in to enter the Kruger Park. 🦁
5. HOW ARE THE mosquitoes? need malaria pills? WHAT ABOUT 🟡 yellow fever vaccination?
How are the Mosquitoes?
Between May - Oct, it's the Dry Winter Season, so there isn't that much mosquitoes actually, but not zero. 🙈
Risk of Malaria is present in Kruger: so Malaria pills are recommended. ✅
There are Daily & Weekly options.
a) Daily: Cheaper but a bit more mafan / troublesome.
You can get from Polyclinic / GP / Teledoctor for about Sgd 30+ for the total duration.
b) Weekly: Quite expensive but more convenient.
Available Over the Counter at Watsons / Guardian but are more expensive: about Sgd 200 - 300.
🟡 Do you need Yellow Fever Vaccination? No it is not required for South Africa. ❌
🇿🇦 South Africa is NOT on Yellow Fever country list.
Thus ❌ NO YELLOW FEVER VACCINATION is required for travel to 🇿🇦 South Africa.
It is often confused with traveling to 🇰🇪 Kenya in East Africa.
In the list below you can see that Kenya is on the below Yellow Fever country list.
6. How much time to spend on safari?
We spent effective 2.5 days for 🦁 Safari game drives.
Arrival Day: 🌅 1 Sunset Safari: ~ 16.00pm to ~ 19.00pm
2 Full Days Safari: ☀️ usually ~ 5.00am to ~ 15.00pm
Safari is a game of chance. 🎲 The more time you allocate for Safari, the more chance you have of seeing more things. ⏰ This is also how you can compare Safari packages.
Prime time for best sightings are in the early morning between 5 - 10am. ☀️ Full day safaris (vs Morning or Afternoon) allow you to venture further into the park and cover more ground.
If you allocate only 1 day for a Full Day Safari: What if the weather is bad? 🥲 That's it my friend. 🙈
will the animals be very far all the time?
There will be times they are very near too! 🙈
When I first entered Kruger National Park, I put a long range telephoto lens onto my DSLR, expecting it would be more likely to encounter some Wildlife at a distance. 📸
Minutes upon entering the park, we encountered a lone large Male Elephant 🐘 just grazing on the side of the road.
I was momentarily confused on how near the Elephant was and immediately grabbed my phone first to take some shots. 😂
📱 Most phones these days have incredible cameras, and are good enough that you will most likely return to Singapore with a bursting camera roll full of incredible encounters.
👀 Anyways we'll provide you some simple binoculars too!
Thankfully we managed to see every one of the Big 5! 🦁
Nothing is guaranteed on a Safari. I guess that is the thrill of the Safari Experience! And also why I can't seem to get enough of going on Safari! 🤣
The only thing you can really do to see more things is to stay longer and go on more Game Drives. 🙈
8. checking out the Wildlife hides 👀
One day when the weather wasn't so good, our Safari guide brought us to visit one of Kruger's Wildlife Hides.
They are camouflaged viewing spots, usually near waterholes, that we may visit to see if we are able to spot any interesting wildlife/birds.
We did see quite a few interesting small birds here!
9. Rest camps in kruger
Kruger has several rest camps within the park where we will stop for Breakfast and Lunch.
Here you can also go to the toilet, get supplies, souvenirs and gifts. 🎁
One of the largest and most popular ones is Skukuza Rest Camp. It's practically a supermarket!
Here you can pick up snacks, drinks, and it also has a wide selection of souvenirs and gifts! ✨

Every morning, Packed Breakfasts are provided by our Safari Lodge.
It usually consists of sandwiches, a muffin and some fruits and nuts.
For Lunch we will usually we have it at one of the Rest Camp's restaurants.
10. Enjoy a sundowner & sunset safari experience 🌅
Enjoying a Sundowner in the African bush is a classic African Safari Tradition. 🥃
One of the most classic South African Sundowner Drinks is Amarula:
a Cream Liqueur drink made from the Marula fruit. It kind of tastes like Baileys!

The Marula Tree is also known as the Elephant Tree 🐘 as Elephants loveee the Marula Fruit and actively search for it when it's in season.
🌅 Sunset Safaris can be even more challenging in terms of spotting Wildlife with the falling light. It's good to manage one's expectations and honestly expect nothing! 🙈🙈
A couple of things we were really lucky to come across: coming face to face with Elephants crossing, and an entire herd moving by the water in the night! 🐘
We also saw some Hippos real close! 🦛
Despite these actually amazing sightings, we did also spend quite some time driving without seeing anything at all! 🙈 So managing one's expectations is super important.
Seeing anything is really already a bonus!!

A Driver and a Wildlife Safari Guide are 2 entirely different things. They can make or break your Safari experience. Technically you could Self Driver Kruger, but you might not be able to notice a Lion or Leopard lying in the bushes. Guides also have their own radio networks to inform each other of special sightings.
