Day 2: arrive in 🇵🇪 Lima, Peru around 4 - 5pm
Known as the gateway to Peru & Machu Picchu, 🇵🇪 Lima is also regarded as the culinary capital of South America. 😋
🥘 Lima is celebrated for its exceptional seafood & world-renowned fusion of cuisines, with influences from Spain, Africa, China & Japan.

We begin our ✨ first night in Lima with a lovely dinner at the Huaca Pucllana Restaurant, where you will also be able to see the ancient pyramid illuminated by night.
Built by the people of Lima, the Huaca Pucllana pyramid dates back to around the 5th to 7th century. Today it is as one of the most important pre-Columbian archaeological sites in Lima.
Day 3: 🌊 Ballestas islands, 🍇 ica vineyard, 🏝️Huacachina Oasis & Desert
After a good night's rest, we journey south of Lima to explore the 🌊 Ballestas Islands, 🇵🇪 Peru's mini Galapagos. ✨
🛳️ Cruise past dramatic arches, caves & cliffs sculpted by the wind & waves, with stunning views of the ocean. 🌊

Thanks to the nutrient rich 🌊 Humboldt Current, the Ballestas Islands attracts a variety of wildlife.
It is home to 🦭 Sea Lions, Humboldt Penguins 🐧 & a variety of sea birds 🦅 including pelicans & cormorants.
Next we visit a 🍇 Traditional Ica Vineyard, where we'll learn about & try their world famous 🍷 Pisco (Grape Brandy).

Pisco-making began in 🇵🇪 Peru in the 16th Century, when the Spanish conquered Peru.
Spanish settlers brought European grapevines 🍇, from mainland Spain & the Canary Islands.
We end off our day in 🏝️ Huacachina Oasis 🏜️, exploring the surrounding desert with an exhilarating 🏎️ Sand Buggy Ride, where we'll also be able to 🏂 try Sand Boarding.

The contrast of 🏝️ lush greenery & the endless desert 🏜️ is a true spectacle. Reminiscent of a time when Huacachina was an important stop along Peru's Coastal Desert Trade Route.
Utilised by ancient civilisations between 📍 Paracas & Nazca, travellers would stop at 🏝️ Huacachina for water, rest & shelter. 💦
Day 4: ✈️ fly Lima to Cusco
Known as the historic heart of South America, Cusco was once the capital of the Incan empire.

✨ From Cusco, we travel north about 1.5hrs into the Sacred Valley, once the 🌾 agricultural & spiritual heartland of the Incan Empire.
Here we'll get to 🐴 Ride Horses through the Maras fields 🌾, with beautiful views of the 🏔️ Andean mountain range.
Thereafter we'll spend a lovely night ✨ in the mountains 🏔️, surrounded by Llamas! 🦙
Day 5: 🧂 Maras salt mines, moray Terraces, ollantaytambo 🏞️ scenic train to aguas calientes 🚂
Today we venture further into 🇵🇪 Peru's Sacred Valley 🏞️, to the Maras Salt Mines, Moray Terraces & the Ollantaytambo Inca Fortress.
Created by pre-Incan civilisations, the 🧂 Maras Salt Mines 🏔️ consist of more than 3,000 individual salt terraces, carved into the cliffs of the Sacred Valley. 🏞️

They are fed by a natural, underground salt spring. 💦 The mineral rich water slowly flows into each pool.
As the water evaporates, 🧂 salt crystallises across the terraces, creating a stunning, snow like landscape ❄️ amidst the dry Andean mountains. 🏔️
👨🏻🌾 Local famers carefully collect the salt by hand, using traditional techniques passed down from generation to generation.

Next, we explore the 🏞️ Moray Terraces. 👩🏻🔬 Scientists believe that the Incans built it as an agricultural experimentation centre. 🌾
🏞️ The circular formation of the terraces allows varying temperatures over the levels.
This allowed the Incans to develop resilient varieties of crops such as 🌽 maize & potatoes 🥔 to thrive across different temperatures. 🌡️

We continue on to the town of 📍 Ollantaytambo, to explore one of the most impressive & well-preserved Incan towns. ✨
Unlike many other archaeological sites, ✨ Ollantaytambo still follows its original Incan urban design, with narrow stone streets & ancient water drainage systems. 💦

🏔️ Instead of doing a multi day trek (ie. Inca Trail, Salkantay Trek, Lares Trek, Inca Jungle Trek), we'll be taking a 🚂 Scenic Train Ride.
This ride will bring us from 📍 Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes ✨ the town at the base of Machu Picchu 🏔️, where we'll spend the night.
🚂 Enjoy a relaxing & immersive experience 🏞️ with views of the Sacred Valley 🏔️ through large panoramic windows & glass ceilings. ✨

Day 6: Enter machu picchu 🏔️ the lost city ✨
Built around the 🗓️ 1450s, under the Incan emperor Pachacuti, historians believe that Machu Picchu 🏔️ was built as a Royal residence for the Emperor & the Royal family. 👑
✨ It was also regarded as a religious & ceremonial centre, with temples & sacred stones.

It was only discovered in 🗓️ 1911, by American historian Hiram Bingham, who brought it to attention of the world. 🌎
From the town of 📍 Aguas Calientes, we'll take a 20-30min bus 🚌 up to Machu Picchu 🏔️.

Utilising the 2A route, explore the best viewpoints of Machu Picchu. 🏔️
From the upper areas for the classic, iconic Machu Picchu 🏞️ postcard view, down to the temples, houses & plazas of the Incan citadel.
🥾 It is a 1.5km route, suitable for average fitness & generally takes ~ 2.5hrs. ⏰

In the 🗓️ 1530s, the Incan civilization collapsed due to a combination of factors:
the Civil War between the Incan emperor brothers Atahualpa & Huáscar
the devastating impact of diseases such as Smallpox, which is estimated to have killed up to 8 - 11 million Incans (50-90% of the population)
the 🇪🇸 Spanish invasion, which included the capture & execution of Emperor Atahualpa.
As a result, remote sites like Machu Picchu 🏔️ were abandoned, leaving it ✨ uninhabited & intact for centuries.

Explore the 🌾 Agricultural zone, full of impressive terraces, a testament to the Incan's advanced knowledge of agriculture.
The Incans were experts in maximising the use of the mountainous land 🏔️, regulating soil temperatures 🌡️, as well as controlling soil erosion.
Discover the ✨ Sacred Plaza / Plaza of the Temples: one of the most essential & sacred spaces of the Incan citadel.

Day 7: Palccoyo Mountain 🏔️
We spend our last day in Cusco visiting the 📍 Palccoyo Mountains 🏔️, the alternative to the popular 🌈 Rainbow / Vincicuna Mountain.
The Palccoyo Mountains 🏔️ are a less crowded, equally spectacular & more pastel-like sight of 🌈 colourful naturally striped mountains. 🏔️

The 🌈 colours are a result of natural mineral deposits layered over millions of years. ✨
🔴 Red / Pink: Iron Oxide
🟡 Yellow / Cream: Iron Sulfide & Limonite
🟢 Green: Chlorite
⚪️ White / Light Beige: Sandstone & Quartz
🥾 For reference, here are the differences in the distance, duration & altitude of these 2 different treks.
🌈 Vinicunca: 5 - 6km hike one way,
~ 4 - 5hrs, 4,300m - 5,200m
🏔️ Palccoyo: 1.5 - 2km hike one way,
~ 1 - 2hrs, 4,700m - 4,900m
